Suvretta Loop: mountain biking in the Engadin

Engadin, Switzerland — words and photographs by Graziano De Maio

The Suvretta Loop starts near St. Moritz, in Celerina, at the foot of Piz Nair: a beautiful mountain bike circuit in the Engadin.

I found this an approachable ride, with a descent that was never overly difficult. The climb can also be shortened by using a lift.

The Suvretta Loop was on my to-do list — perhaps for too long. It had always been there, yet I only discovered it after fifteen years of riding. Still, it is reassuring to realise how much remains to discover even when you think you have ridden almost everything.

Dear fellow rider, there is little complicated about organising this one. Whether you arrive in Celerina by car or train, it barely takes a hundred metres of riding before you spot a Suvretta Loop sign. The main decision is whether to pedal uphill or use the Corviglia lift.

The climb is well signposted. Follow the signs to the top of the Corviglia lift, then continue into beautiful Val Suvretta. The trail traverses the hillside high above a remarkable valley floor before reaching the Suvretta Pass. From there, enjoy five kilometres of singletrack before joining the gravel road in Val Bever, which returns to Samedan and Celerina.

From Val Chiavenna, the approach to this circular Engadin route crosses the Maloja Pass. From Livigno or Valtellina, it crosses the Bernina Pass.
