Strictly speaking, the Strada degli Eroi is the roughly 2 km section linking Galleria d’Havet with Rifugio Achille Papa on the Pasubio massif. Built across the steep walls of Val Canale, it has an uneven natural surface. Its name commemorates soldiers awarded Italy’s Gold Medal of Military Valour, remembered on plaques fixed to the rock.

The name is also used more broadly for the road from Pian delle Fugazze, 1,162 m, to Rifugio Papa, 1,928 m: over 10 km of steady climbing with some surfaced switchbacks.

During the First World War it was a path, later widened to improve access to the memorial area as an alternative to the Strada degli Scarubbi, which can remain snowbound longer.

The original account notes that motor traffic was closed in the 1980s for safety reasons. The road remains an important approach to Pasubio, used by walkers and cyclists. Check current local access arrangements before setting out.
