After riding around Lake Constance the previous year, we made a last-minute decision to stay closer to home for our next summer cycling holiday. We chose a less familiar but equally attractive route: the R3 Karnischer Radwanderweg, or Carnic cycle route.
Our account describes 99 km along the Gail valley, just across the Italian–Austrian border, from Kötschach-Mauthen to Villach.
The group was the same as in 2009, with one big change. Filippo, who had travelled the previous year’s 200 km Lake Constance circuit in a trailer with his brother Tommaso, would now pedal beside me on his new bicycle.
