Livigno MTB trails in one day: Alpisella, Federia and Mine

Livigno MTB trails in one day: Alpisella, Federia and Mine

This article brings together some of Livigno’s best-known MTB trails in one day, with photographs, maps, elevation information and GPS routes. You can also split the itinerary across two days or consider riding it on an e-MTB.

When I spend two days in Livigno, I often devote one to the bike park and the other to pedalling until I have had my fill of the natural trails. Dozens of photographs would barely begin to show their beauty. For help exploring the network, see my guide to Trailforks.

Three stages on Livigno’s natural trails

This collection focuses on trails outside the bike parks:

  1. Livigno, Val Alpisella, Passo Trela, Livigno.
  2. Livigno, Carosello 3000, Federia, Livigno.
  3. Livigno, Mottolino, Valle delle Mine, Livigno.

Stage 1: Alpisella and Trela

The Adda springs descent near Livigno

The descent past the springs of the River Adda, one of the most scenic trails around Livigno.

This first stage is entirely pedal-powered: roughly 24 km and 900 metres of ascent. Leave Livigno towards the lake, follow its right-hand shore, cross Ponte delle Capre and climb towards Passo Alpisella. Descend around two kilometres on gravel, then take the Adda springs trail on the left to Lake Cancano. Its scenery and flowing riding make it a favourite.

Turn right along the lake, then right again into Val Pettini towards Malga Trela and Val Trela. Stop at the farm for a snack and a shepherd’s coffee, then climb through the meadow behind it towards Passo Trela.

From the pass, a long descent offers wonderful flow and a fairy-tale setting. When a wooden bridge appears across the stream, do not cross: keep the stream on your left and continue down. The trail reaches the flat floor of Val Tort, where a final beautiful section on pine needles returns to Lake Livigno. Honestly, I would call this one of Livigno’s best trails too!

Stage 2: Costaccia, Carosello and Federia by lift

Federia MTB trail in Livigno

Now it is time to let the lifts help. Return to Livigno and take the Costaccia lift. From the top, climb a little and take the Costaccia trail to the Carosello 3000 middle station. Alternatively, skip that section and head straight to Carosello.

Take the Carosello lift to the top. About a hundred metres beyond the station, pick up the Val Federia trail and follow it to the farm. After a food stop, continue down the gravel road to the Passo Cassana junction. Climb for about a hundred metres, then look left for the Tee trail, which returns to Calchera.

Stage 3: Mottolino and Valle delle Mine

Natural trails in Valle delle Mine

Valle delle Mine: a natural trail with just the right flow.

Take the Mottolino gondola. At the top, facing the bike park descents, turn left onto a hillside trail towards the entrance to Enduro Natural. You can descend that trail or continue traversing. For this itinerary, stay high and ignore the downhill turnings until you reach a little hut directly on the trail.

A beautiful descent leads into Valle delle Mine. Turn left onto the gravel road for a couple of kilometres. At the mountain hut, cross the stream on the wooden bridge and take the wonderful trail back down the valley. Return to Livigno on the cycle path or the panoramic route.

The scenic Crap della Parè trail, with its spectacular view of Lake Livigno, is the one missing from this selection. I will leave you the pleasure of finding it. I hope this account helps you discover the natural trails beyond Livigno’s bike parks.
