Climbing Vesuvius by mountain bike: a historical route account
- Mtb life
- June 27, 2014
This short account was first published in June 2014, when discoveryvesuvius.it offered an MTB ascent of Vesuvius. It does not confirm present-day access, bike permissions or the availability of that service. Check the park’s current access arrangements before planning a ride.
The route described the ascent towards the Gran Cono and the Valle dell’Inferno, one of the park’s most striking panoramic areas.
The outing began in Lavarella, Terzigno, crossing lava from the 1929 eruption and dense pine woodland before joining the old Strada Matrone. A sequence of climbing bends reached around 1,000 m above sea level.
From that area, the original account described access towards the Gran Cono and views of the Gulf of Naples, Sorrento peninsula, Ischia, Capri and Procida, together with Monte Somma, Punta Nasone, the Cognoli di Ottaviano and Valle dell’Inferno.
